Program News

Your neighbours are doing it

A growing number of Torontonians are turning to the sun to heat their hot water.  They are enjoying hot showers, soothing baths and sparkling clean dishes thanks to water heated with the pure, clean energy of the sun.  We’ve posted thoughts from a few solar hot water system users on our website.  Check it out and see what others are saying about the cost and environmental advantages of tapping the sun.

Still at work

Solar Neighbourhoods still at workThe Solar Neighbourhoods program remains ready and able to help you tap the power of the sun despite the current City labour disruption.  If you have questions about solar hot water systems, would like to request an information package, need info on system suppliers or want to know more about how incentive programs can help make solar affordable for you, give us a call at 416-392-6795 or email solar@toronto.ca.    And remember, with our no interest, no deposit required finance program, you can have a solar water heating system for less than the monthly cost of cable TV.

Because many of the Solar Neighbourhoods-eligible systems have been pre-approved for building permits, if you plan your system installation now you’ll be able to get a permit quickly once City business resumes.  Meanwhile, this is a great time to be getting some of our pre-qualified suppliers over to look at your home’s suitability for solar and to provide estimates.  It’s also a good time to complete the first part of your ecoEnergy assessment, which qualifies you for $2,500 in incentives and the $1,000 Solar Neighbourhoods discount.

Take a look at the Solar Neighbourhoods supplier list today and don’t forget to book your ecoEnergy assessment before you head out on holidays.  Remember, the $1,000 Solar Neighbourhoods incentive is first come, first served until the money is gone, while the federal Home Renovation Tax Credit expires in six months. Don’t strike out — act now!

Solar shines

Conservation and renewable energy a great combination

Drawing cold water from Lake Ontario, filtering and treating it, and then pumping it all across the City takes a great deal of energy.  Then more energy is used to heat it for your morning shower or evening bath.  That’s why being a conserver of water also makes you an excellent conserver of energy.  A 2008 study found that by increasing water efficiency by 20% the Province of Ontario would save enough electricity to power 95% of all homes in Toronto each year!  Conserving water also means that a solar hot water system can meet a larger percentage of your water heating needs.
